Whole Foods alters brand operations in mainstreaming move; broker job losses expected
Fox Business, Whole Foods Magazine

Whole Foods Market will change the way companies can sell and market their products in its stores beginning next year, in one of the biggest moves yet in its push to operate more like a traditional market. The chain will no longer allow "brand representatives," or brokers, to promote their products or check to make sure they are stocked and displayed correctly. Whole Foods also is centralizing much of its decision-making regarding the assortment of products across the chain. As word of the change spread, industry is bracing for job losses. Read coverage:

MEDIA WATCH: TCM
Economist article underscores sacrosanct nature of Western medicine
Nutraingredients-usa.com, the Economist
An article in The Economist bashing Traditional Chinese Medicine as “state sponsored quackery” is an example of the arrogance of the Western point of view on science and medicine, a view which denies the roots of all medical knowledge, according to Roy Upton, founder of the American Herbal Pharmacopoeia. China should be looked to as an example rather than a source of ridicule, he said. Ikhlas Khan, Ph.D., director of the National Center of Natural Products Research at the University of Mississippi, noted the importance of efforts to support these modalities with data in the Western mode to go with the extensive traditional information. The Economist article calls TCM remedies unproven and dangerous. Warning letter to Colorado company highlights importance of legal counsel; is supplement office living up to its mandate?
Nutraingredients-usa.com, Natural Products INSIDER
A recent warning letter to a Colorado dietary supplement company, Mussi Master, illustrates the hot water companies can find themselves in when starting business operations without adequate counsel. The company was cited for a laundry list of violations including impermissible drug claims, label inconsistencies and GMP violations. Since its founding in 2015, FDA’s Office of Dietary Supplement Programs has been tasked with enhancing effectiveness of dietary supplement regulation, but core questions are now surfacing. Has the office met its mission? Does it have ample funding and manpower to fulfill its charge? Would an infusion of new money be a smart use of taxpayer dollars? Herbalife’s senior advisor on product science, safety and compliance Frankos Vasillios Bill comments. Read coverage:

Probi introduces probiotic melts; Marine Ingredients pairs omega-3s, phytocannabinoids; Monteloeder app enhances supplement experience
Nutraingredients-usa.com, Nutritional Outlook
To meet consumer demand for innovative, non-pill probiotic supplements, Swedish maker Probi developed Probi Fast Melt, a powder stick that melts in the mouth with no water needed. Each stick was developed to hold a daily dose of Probi’s probiotics strain LP299V. Marine Ingredients has announced the launch of a new product platform that combines the benefits of omega-3s with those of phytocannabinoids. The company’s plan is to capitalize on how the action of the two seemingly disparate ingredients is similar in the body. Monteloeder’s new, interactive smartphone app for its ingredients is designed to “enhance” the supplement user’s experience. The app benefits marketers selling products containing Monteloeder ingredients by helping those companies create a more interactive experience for their supplement customers. Read coverage:

Controversies in Nebraska, Indiana illustrate CBD’s precarious legal status
Marijuana Business Daily
A recent memo from Nebraska’s top law-enforcement official – in which he called cannabidiol products “illegal” -- and a recent brouhaha in Indiana has underscored the challenges faced by CBD manufacturers and retailers nationwide. CBD oils low in THC are legal in 50 states and can be sold everywhere from grocery stores to head shops, right? Not necessarily, which is creating headaches for CBD businesses in states where law enforcement may respond with legal action. Read more→

Gymnema lowers sugar cravings; study confirms cranberry for UTIs; vitamin K supports bones; supplement combo fights pancreatitis; vitamin E promising anti-inflammatory
Nutraceuticals World, Eurekalert, Nutraingredients-asia.com
In a recent study, investigators at the Oregon Research Institute in Eugene found that consuming a sweet-taste-suppressing lozenge containing gymnemic acid (Gymnema sylvestre leaf extract) produced a 31 percent reduction in desire for candy and a 44 percent reduction in total candy intake. The results were published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology. A comprehensive meta-analysis and assessment of human clinical trials, published in the The Journal of Urology, assures practitioners and their patients that cranberry products are a low-cost, low-risk and effective way to help prevent recurrent UTIs. Statistical analysis suggests higher dietary vitamin K intake is significantly associated with a decreased risk of fractures, according to researchers from Jinan, China, in a study published in the journal Medicine. Well-timed and appropriate supplementation with glutamine, omega-3, prebiotics and probiotics can help manage or prevent acute pancreatitis, especially if personalized to the individual, according to a review led by Jiangnan University. Researchers at the University of North Carolina say the y-tocopherol isoform of vitamin E can reduce typical inflammatory features of asthma and could be a future steroid-free option for sufferers.
