NDI guidance may usher in a whole different world: Industry names specific issues
Nutrition Business Journal, Nutraingredients-usa.com, Nutritional OutlookIn this commentary by UNPA President Loren Israelsen, he predicts the proposed NDI guidance envisions a dietary supplement world much different than the current one. While providing some context of what was intended for ingredients in DSHEA, he notes several key concerns, including the race to save current ODIs, as well as the definitions what triggers NDI status. In an interview at SupplySide West, Israelsen also notes that the document could stifle the industry's ability to innovate with its underlying view that the existing safety record of supplements is no guarantee of future performance.

Each segment of the industry has its own specific concerns over the guidance. An important topic is microorganisms. DuPont’s Amy Smith discusses what the guidance might mean in the probiotics category, explaining that there are several points that should not apply. For the botanical segment, uncertainty over the guidance has effectively stalled the innovation for one botanical supplier, while other firms mull over its implications on solvent-extraction techniques. Sage extract may provide more viable method of omega-3 encapsulation
Nutraingredients.com
Encapsulating omega-3s with sage polyphenols and gum arabic could be a more healthy and economically viable option than the techniques currently used and may open up the potential of boosting protein intake. The findings are from a team of researchers from three Indian institutions. Current techniques struggle with cost and use of high temperatures that may destabilize the emulsion and cause oxidation. Read more→

CBD
Industry divided on whether hemp issues hurt or help the category
Nutritional Outlook
Although FDA does not recognize CBD as a dietary supplement, business for hemp-based products is booming, and industry stakeholders say the attention from the regulatory conflict has actually been good for business rather than attracting negative attention. Still, while companies are optimistic about the future of hemp and CBD products, they do face an uncertain future, and companies may have to find an alternative pathway to distinguish their products from what GW Pharmaceuticals is pursuing on the drug end. Read more→

Scientists report color-coded labels sway consumers: synbiotics relieve digestive distress; too much calcium may not be good; supplements may boost antidepressants; cocoa linked to CVD biomarkers
FoodNavigator.com, Nutraingredients.com, New Hope Network, Nutraceuticals World
Researchers in Germany and the U.S. have found that traffic light-coded labels can help move consumers toward healthier options in a study that found the color-coded labels significantly increased healthy choices. The effects are strongest when several nutrients are displayed. A new Chinese trial has shown that synbiotics can lead to significant improvement in slow-transit constipation. A new multi-ethnic, 10-year U.S. study has concluded that calcium intake from food supplements may increase the risk of coronary artery calcification. In a recent review of 40 clinical trials, researchers at the Universities of Melbourne and Harvard have found that using four different supplements (omega-3, SAMe, bioactive folate and vitamin D) in tandem with antidepressants can make a significant difference for patients fighting depression. A review of RCTs at Brown University has found potentially beneficial effects of flavonol-rich cocoa on cardiovascular biomarkers. Read coverage:
