Pfizer reviews potential sale of health and wellness business; TSG and retail pioneer partner to buy LuckyVitamin
Nutraingredients-usa.com, New Hope Network
Pfizer announced that it is “reviewing strategic alternatives” for its consumer healthcare business, the parent company of many iconic OTC brands, from dietary supplements to personal care, including Centrum, Caltrate and Emergen-C, which it acquired in 2012. Financial analysts expect the unit to sell for about four times its sales, which is around $14 billion. Online retail pioneer Sam Wolfe has partnered with private equity firm TSG Consumer Partners to boost LuckyVitamin, the company he founded 12 years ago and later sold. Wolfe and TSG will purchase the company from GNC Holdings, noting opportunity to increase customer satisfaction with quicker delivery, better offers and wider product selection. Read coverage:

Hi-Tech Pharma founder says indictment is effort to prohibit DMAA sales
Natural Products INSIDER
Hi-Tech Pharmaceuticals founder Jared Wheat has been charged with money laundering and wire fraud by federal authorities in an indictment unsealed last week. According to court documents, Wheat was charged with 18 criminal counts, which also included allegations that the company introduced misbranded drugs into interstate commerce. In a phone interview, Wheat called the charges "bogus" and suggested the criminal indictment was a rouse by the government to secure as a condition of his bond Hi-Tech’s agreement to not sell DMAA. Read more→

Lucky’s Market looks to pioneer CBD category in retail as WADA OKs CBD for athletes
The Cannabist
Lucky’s Market, the grocery chain owned by Kroger, with roots in hemp-friendly Colorado, says it’s “not afraid" to be disruptive in the growing but controversial CBD category. As other national retailers hold off on selling CBD, Lucky’s is now offering a handful of brands at its stores across the nation and is launching a line of private-label, full-spectrum hemp oils, body butters and salves. The timing might be fortunate as the World Anti-Doping agency recently removed CBD from its 2018 prohibited substances list, although it warned that THC, the chemical compound in cannabis, remains banned. Solvents are a ubiquitous part of the production of herbal extracts. The American Botanical Council is nearing completion of a new publication to be a one-stop resource for industry stakeholders to see what solvents are used, what their accepted residual levels are and other important information. Meanwhile, a nascent organic herbal cooperative model, Vermont Herb Growers Cooperative, offers the promise of increasing domestic herbal ingredient sources. The founders say they have been pleasantly surprised that demand for these higher-priced materials has consistently outstripped supply. Read coverage:

Officer’s death prompts further scrutiny of kratom
ABC News
The death of a narcotics officer from a small Adirondack town has been attributed to kratom and is intensifying scrutiny on the herbal supplement. The death is striking fear among kratom advocates that it could be cited in an ongoing federal review to get it banned nationwide. Six states already ban kratom, and the federal Drug Enforcement Agency proposed a ban last year, citing 15 previous deaths from 2014 to 2016. That proposal was withdrawn following public, trade and Congressional opposition. UNPA has a trade policy that bans member companies from selling the botanical. Read more→

Older brands struggle with millennial consumers; Lycored study shows skincare customers put health firstFast Company, Nutraceuticals World
Mass market brands that appeal mostly to older generations may be putting their longevity at risk. Millennials—the largest generation in history—could by some estimates control $24 trillion of wealth by 2020. A recent survey by Enso’s World Value Index revealed that while some brands by nature appeal to older generations, others are underperforming among younger generations because their brands don’t have a mission or meaning. Consumers of skin care products are more interested in feeling healthy than looking younger or more attractive, according to a new report from Lycored, which explores the growing popularity of supplements for skin care. The report surveyed 480 consumers in France and the U.K. Read coverage:

Probiotics fight breast cancer; black tea aids weight loss; low K tied to enlarged hearts; prenatal vitamins lower autism risk; calcium boosts cardiac healthNutraingredients.com
Differences in the bacterial makeup of breast tissue in those with breast cancer point to the existence of a microbiome within the breast as well as the potential of probiotic use in the battle against breast cancer, according to a new study from Cleveland Clinic’s Genomic Medicine Institute. While the benefits of green tea polyphenols have long been touted, new research from the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition suggests that those found in black tea may also aid weight loss by acting as a prebiotic. Low intake of phylloquinone (vitamin K1) may be associated with increased risk of enlargement of the major pumping chamber of the heart, according to new research from Augusta University. A recent BMJ study indicates that taking a multivitamin during pregnancy is associated with a lower risk of autism spectrum disorders in children. However, researchers warn that evidence is not yet sufficient to change health care practices. Patients with lower serum calcium levels have an increased risk of sudden cardiac arrest, according to a recent study in Mayo Clinic Proceedings. Read coverage:
