Loren D. Israelsen
Mr. Israelsen has been deeply involved in the commercial, political and regulatory issues facing the global dietary supplement industry since 1980. On the commercial side, he served as general counsel and president of Nature’s Way Products Inc. Much of his career has involved creating and supporting efforts to allow broad access to dietary supplements, together with the systems to assure product quality, safety and benefit.
He has authored more than 150 articles and/or book chapters and has lectured in over 30 countries on dietary supplement and functional food issues. Currently, his greatest areas of interest are the growing presence of synthetic biology in the natural products industry, personalized nutrition, preservation of the cultural knowledge on which the natural products industry is founded and securing seat upgrades on Delta Airlines.
Frank J. Lampe - VP, Communications & Industry Relations
Frank Lampe is a highly respected healthy-living media veteran with 30 years of communications, marketing and management experience in the natural products industry. He has been at the leading edge of—and a leading media participant in—four important healthy-living movements: the creation of national legislative and regulatory structures for the organic foods and dietary supplements industries; the integration of private and public capital into the natural products industry; the LOHAS (Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability) movement; and the integration of natural products with integrative medicine.
He has served in a number of executive positions, including with New Hope Natural Media, where as editorial director he oversaw all editorial, research and management for trade and consumer publications; as executive vice president of InnoVision Health Media, which published Natural Solutions and Alternative Medicine magazines, three peer-reviewed medical journals and 13 consumer books covering natural health; as cofounder and managing director of Natural Business Communications, which published the LOHAS Journal, produced the annual LOHAS Forum and completed the first lifestyles of health and sustainability (LOHAS) market research; and as founder & president of Silvercliffe Media Inc., a healthy-living media and publishing consultancy. Frank completed the Authentic Leadership certificate course from Naropa University.
Most recently, he served as the director of communications for the American Herbal Products Association. Mr. Lampe was the recipient of the Industry Champion Award from the Natural Products Association in 2011. He currently sits on the advisory board for the Institute for Natural Medicine.
Kira Olsen - Director, Member Services & Events
Kira Olsen serves as UNPA's Director of Member Services & Events and has been with the organization since 2006. She manages the daily functions at UNPA, including member support, new client screening, and facilities, finance and office administration. Kira is also in charge of the planning and production of all UNPA events and educational offerings. Ms. Olsen comes to UNPA with a background in advertising and marketing. She graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelor of Science degree in speech communications and minored in sociology. When Kira is not working, she loves to do anything "fun, challenging and exciting," such as training for marathons and other athletic events, snowboarding, wakeboarding, scuba diving, and most of all, spending time with her husband and three beautiful children.
Mika Israelsen - Director, Operations
Mika Israelsen serves as UNPA’s director of operations. Mika manages UNPA's daily operations along with finances and accounting. As part of her responsibilities, she maintains close relationships with UNPA’s customers and vendors, in addition to the extensive support she provides the rest of the UNPA staff and its members. She has deep experience with all aspects of office management through her previous tenures with GOED, the omega-3 trade association, and essential oil manufacturer Almarome. She studied business management at Salt Lake Community College and when not at the office, Mika enjoys cooking, gardening and hiking the Wasatch Mountains. She lives in Littleton, Colo., with her husband and beautiful son.
Stephen DeNorscia - webmaster
Stephen DeNorscia serves as UNPA’s Webmaster, helping to maintain up-to-date, relevant content to keep the UNPA membership and the dietary supplement industry at large informed about ongoing developments within the natural products and dietary supplement industry. He also assists with UNPA editorial and marketing projects. Mr. DeNorscia is a graduate of Brandeis University, and he has had a long career in graphic design, event promotion and nonprofit management. He has served as event manager and executive director for Boulder’s Open Studios in Boulder, Colo.; marketing manager for Montalvo Art Center in Saratoga, Calif.; and executive director for the Ringing Rocks Foundation in Sedona, Ariz. Stephen also owned his own graphic design studio in Boulder, Multi Media Arts, where he helped design 13 Wild Oats retail stores (later purchased by Whole Foods Market). He currently serves as the vice president of the board for Thistle Affordable Housing in Boulder County.
Larisa Pavlick - VP, Global Regulatory & Compliance
Larisa Pavlick has more than 20 years of combined experience working within the dietary supplement industry, including nearly eight years as an investigator at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. She has a passion for the dietary supplements and natural products industry and for helping others. Larisa has worked in the development of botanical products, utilizing Traditional Chinese Medicine, ethnomedicinal plants and Ayurveda. Through robust scientific research and collaboration with her mentors, she has assisted in the formulation of products designed to support the negative effects of nutritional deficiencies, stress, aging and more. With a strong background, education and training in U.S. regulations and quality, she has spent much of her career evaluating the quality and integrity of ingredients and the manufacturing controls used to produce these finished products. During her career, Larisa has dedicated herself to helping ensure consumers receive the benefits of safe and ethical vitamins, minerals, botanicals and other dietary supplement products.
Larisa graduated from the University of Colorado-Denver, where she received a bachelor’s degree in Biology. Outside of work and spending time with her family, some of her favorite activities include riding motorcycles, gardening, reading and enjoying the great outdoors, including kayaking, hiking, biking, boating and water sports and camping.

Daniel Mabey - Asia General Manager
Based in Beijing, China, Daniel Mabey serves as UNPA's Asia General Manager. He primarily coordinates the association’s relationship with its Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) Partner, the China Nutrition and Health Food Association (CNHFA), and works with China-based UNPA members. Daniel also provides UNPA members with market research, regulatory support and other services. He has more than 10 years of experience working in China and also speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese. Daniel earned his B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania and also studied abroad at Peking University. When not working, Daniel likes to ski, run, read, cook and travel.
Heidi Calder - Executive Assistant
Heidi Calder brings 20 years of experience in the sports medicine and natural health fields. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education with an emphasis in exercise physiology. She has also served as an instructor for the Utah Heart Association and worked at the LDS Hospital Fitness Institute in Salt Lake City. Since 1987, she has been the executive assistant to UNPA President Loren Israelsen during her tenure at Nature's Way, the LDI Group, and UNPA. She is a skilled gardener and chef and the mother of three awesome boys.
Karen Raterman - Editor
Karen Raterman has more than 20 years experience in the natural products industry media and works with UNPA on marketing and editorial projects, such as the UNPA Digest and the UNPA Asia Report. Karen also directs a content marketing company, New Leaf Communications, where she specializes in content development, market research, corporate communications, public relations and social media strategies for natural brands, dietary supplements and botanical ingredients. Karen brings broad experience in the industry with market insights across the supply chain, in all sales channels and in consumer health and wellness trends. She has worked with a variety of leading industry companies and thought-leaders including the United Natural Products Alliance, American Botanical Council, the CoQ10 Association, Health Focus International, KeHe, the Natural Marketing Institute, Think Media and Innate Response/FoodState. On the editorial side, she is a contributing writer to New Nutrition Business, HerbalGram and Engredea. She has held numerous positions at New Hope Natural Media (now Penton/Informa), where she served as editor-in-chief of the Natural Foods Merchandiser and Delicious Living magazine, as well as VP Content Develoment, directing the company’s print, online and in-person content, including education programs for Natural Products Expo East and West. When not on deadline, Karen likes to get out and hike or ski with her family under the great blue skies of Colorado.
