After 19 years as the director of the Office of Dietary Supplements at the National Institutes of Health, Paul Coates, Ph.D., has announced his retirement, effective June 22.
Joseph Betz, Ph.D., director of the Analytical Methods and Reference Materials Program at ODS/NIH, will serve as acting director.
The NIH announcement can be found here. Dr. Coates’ bio can be found here. Coates also oversaw the publication of the ODS 2017-2021 Strategic Plan.
“UNPA and I have known Paul since day one at ODS,” said UNPA President Loren Israelsen. “He was always professional and collaborative. From the very beginning, ODS and UNPA have enjoyed a very friendly relationship. His efforts to build the work and scope of ODS have been welcomed by UNPA and the rest of the dietary supplement industry.”
Israelsen noted that Coates has been very involved with UNPA, including his participation in an Experts Insights webinar in January 2016 to discuss the ODS Dietary Supplement Label Database. In turn, Israelsen has also spoken at ODS events. “Paul was always a willing and helpful resource for countless industry and media inquiries,” he added.
“With Paul’s retirement, we welcome Joe Betz to the position of acting director,” Israelsen said. “Joe has been a long-time friend to both UNPA and me personally. We’ve known Joe since his days at FDA and the American Herbal Products Association, and of course, since he’s been at ODS—spanning 30+ years. We’re delighted that he’s coming in as acting director and look forward to a continued, strong and collaborative relationship with Joe and ODS.”
