SCNM | THE RESEARCH SCIENTIST - ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY

Job Description/Summary
The Research Scientist - Analytical Chemistry is expected to:  
  • Perform analysis of natural product samples
  • Process and analyze data
  • Maintain the quality and availability of routine reagents and standards
  • Present and discuss data and results in team meetings
  • Collect and analyze data collected from scientific experiments and present summaries of research to PI
  • Assist with the development and implementation of analytical methods for the analysis of small molecules natural products 
  • Document test procedures and summarize results in reports and papers 
  • Coordinate required maintenance, calibration and qualification of instruments
  • Maintain accurate official records of research (laboratory notebooks, etc.)
  • Train and mentor other staff members and students 
  • Conduct scientific literature searches related to research projects
  • Attend outside instrumentation, technique, and scientific knowledge training courses
  • When applicable, prepare patent applications, grants, proposals and peer reviewed research publications
  • Perform routine lab maintenance and daily lab duties
  • Support the equipment maintenance in the lab
  • Other duties as assigned

Experience Required
  • Master or Ph.D. (preferred) in mass spectrometry, analytical chemistry, medicinal chemistry, phytochemistry, pharmacognosy, or natural products chemistry
  • Hands-on experience in analytical method development and validation for small molecules is an asset, particularly in the context of phytochemistry, natural products chemistry
  • 4 years – Research experience in natural products chemistry 
  • 2 years – Experience in quantification and/or structure elucidation of natural products using LC/MS instruments including instrument maintenance and trouble shooting
  • Should be familiar with method validation and also hands on instruments skills with LCMS and will have expertise and interest in developing and applying quantification methodologies at the interface of mass spectrometry and natural products research. 
  • Experience with mass spectrometry metabolomics experimental design and data analysis and/or expertise in the isolation and de-novo structure elucidation of natural products are desirable characteristics.

Education Requirements
  • Minimum Education/Certifications: Master’s degree in chemistry, phytochemistry, pharmacognosy, mass spectroscopy or related fields 
  • Desired Education/Certifications: PhD degree in chemistry, phytochemistry, pharmacognosy, mass spectroscopy or related fields
  • Any combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities.
